WIP – Jasmine blouse

January 6, 2012

Fabric: bed sheet from The Ridge House, $0

Pattern: Jasmine by Colette, $16

Notions: thread, fusible interfacing; both from stash

Time to complete: Who knows? Didn’t keep track, and yes, I actually used French seams on a muslin. Because I’m that nutty.

First worn: A few days ago, around the house

Wear again: Um, yeah… maybe at The Ridge House, picking berries, baking a pie, hanging out laundry to dry on a sun-kissed July day in northern Maine, kiddos and Mushie running back from the swimming hole. (conjure up scenes from The Tree of Life) In real life, in public… prolly not. Though it’s not too bad tucked into a skirt.

Total price: $16, though if considered here, then does that mean I no longer have to consider the pattern price a cost?

I’m kind of cheating here, posting the Jasmine blouse in two parts just to fluff out the numbers. Gotta make sure I get in those three posts per week, y’all. This is my muslin, version 2 in a straight up size 6.  This is the third Colette pattern I’ve sewn, and let me preface by saying that they are a dream to work from. Seriously, every. single. step. is clearly spelled out. Yeah, this is a beginner pattern, but even the Rooibos was the same. I’m used to filling in lots of blanks. Stuff you’re just “supposed to know”, and had Colette been around 15 years ago, learning to sew would have been a breeze. However, still working out the fit with this line. In fact, fit is a huge goal that I aim to work on this year, and yet managed to leave it off my last post. I definitely think Sarai & co. are generous with the sizing. They give finished dimensions, so you can see how much ease is built in. But for me, this is three for three in having to size down. No way am I a 4 in anything, but that’s what I’ll be starting from with this pattern company from here on out. So let’s leave those numbers out of it… size is so arbitrary. If you have my dimensions (34 high bust, 36 bust, 28 waist [a high one at that]), you might want to consider a size 4, and if not you might want to size down anyway. Another note to self – if I make this version again with the notched cuff, I’ll make the band a bit narrower. The proportions as-is aren’t quite to my liking but very cute on many of the versions I’ve seen out there.

Mushie was very concerned. About the prospect of me wearing this out of the house? The fact that my camera was teetering on a gorilla pod on top of books on top of the ironing board? About not getting into the picture?

Cute! I like it :) Especially your furry friend there.

Thanks… there was only one photo she didn’t jump into :)

I think your Jasmine is really cute! I could see you wearing it with a crisp yellow linen skirt – so pretty!

Ooh, that sounds nice! I’ll be on the lookout for a yellow that suits me. If it exists!

so cute! bedsheets are great for muslins! I bet you could wear that out and get tons of compliments, it looks great! May I enquire where you got your personalized tags? I love that idea, my mum used to do something like that but i think they were a generic ‘made by so and so’ kind of deal :)

I like it, Lavender! Have you chosen fabric for the final version?

    • January 7, 2012 12:05 pm

The final is actually done… that’s why I feel this post was a bit of a cheat ;)

I like the Jasmine blouse and I love the fact you made it from a sheet! It looks good on you (or rather you look good in it, as my mother would correct). Wear it and enjoy it!

Y’all are convincing me to wear this out of the house! I like the difference in phrasing. The subtleties of language…. your mother is wise ;)

I like this! I would totally wear this out and about. I’m about to embark on my own Jasmine mission. Did you use all of the fabric in the recommended yardage? In my experience, Colette Patterns overestimates how much you will need.

    • January 7, 2012 12:13 pm

Hmmm… I dunno about yardage used, because I cut up an old sheet. And on my final Jasmine, I cut from a bolt that I picked up years ago. I know it’s not much help! This one does take up a bit of yardage simply because it’s on the bias. Can’t wait to see your version!

I love this blouse, and I just a bought the pattern for myself a few days ago and am eagerly awaiting it’s arrival. Thanks for the tip about the sizing!

    • January 7, 2012 12:14 pm

I hope it helps, and I haven’t lead you astray! Everyone seems to think this is okay, but I thought it too large on me.

So sweet! This style really suits you!

If you hadn’t said you’d made it out of a sheet, I’d never have guessed. It looks beautifully made and the neckline on you is really elegant,

    • January 7, 2012 12:16 pm

Thank you, Clare :) It’s a bit gapey (IMO) at this size, but I do like this open neckline. Glad to hear it doesn’t look too much like I raided the linen cabinet!

Oh, I would wear that in a heartbeat. You look darling in it. Your next version is sure to be wonderful also. As to sizing, I also find it difficult to pick a size. I just finished some Clover pants (oh, are they nice!) and I think I should go down one more size for my next pair. Vanity sizing? who knows? I work off a ton of msmnts and really don’t consider the final size a valid indication. I will say, though, that in the Big 4 I blend more between sizes and in Colette patterns, I can usually use one size.

    • January 7, 2012 12:20 pm

Too kind :) I feel like I’m swimming a bit here, but may wear it out. It took me ages to get what “msmnts” meant!!! I really want to get fitting down this year, so my process is quicker. I’m so slooooow!

    Damn Cute!

I LOVE this! Lavender. It fits you perfectly. Nice finishing, too! I’m excited to see the final version.

that is looking very good for a muslin from a sheet so i can’t wait to see the final version!
