Thievery, incorporated

March 5, 2012

I know it’s rude to boast, but when you come home with a small bag stuffed to the brim of these wonders of cloth, it’s hard not to feel a little chuffed. Especially when it was free. I paid nothing for this, people. Zilch. Zero. Before our weekend visit, my mom mentioned she was cleaning her sewing room. I know where my bread is buttered I am a gracious daughter and offered to help. She’s been a quilter for so long now, that I just about forgot the ridiculous amount of garment fabric that was tucked away in there. She was color-coding & making way for all the quilting cotton, so what else was I to do than liberate some of these choice pieces?

Be prepared, a feast for the eyes.

mystery knit. wrap dress?

chambray. classic, simple.

heathered pink/lavender knit. oh so drapey.

basic red jersey. moderate drape.

basic fuchsia jersey. moderate drape.

crimson & camel jersey. very drapey.

b&w linen-like blend. the stripes aren't the right width, but i think i've found the fabric for my Lady Mary blouse.

lycra. and lace. i need help.

the most gorgeous sateen you'll never get your hands on.

silver lycra. more lace. really? i couldn't help it.

I held back, I swear, and only brought home notions/findings and fabric in my current palette. I’m still sticking to my spring/summer plan though!!!

zips and bias and hem tapes, oh my!

tiny ric rac. blue polka dot bias tape. flame lace hem.

metal zips. rad turquoise tape. rad.

these are on loan. ruffler, bias tape thingie, rolled hem. don't know what the others are.

Of course, there were some very unfortunate trips down memory lane. My crazy runs deep, y’all.

And then some sweeter memories, even if they are permanently stuck in the 90s. I didn’t take any of these, but it was fun. If only I had found the cut/unsewn MC Hammer pants of teal & black satin. There should be three pairs, neglected after my 6th grade self and two friends got into an argument and scrapped our dance routine for the talent show. Oh, those pre-teen years. She-ra, think we still got it?!

winter carnival. choker. combat boots.

maxi skirt. good god.

mini dress w/spaghetti straps worn over t. combat boots.

I may have neatly tucked away more yardage in my old bedroom. There was a lot of lycra. Bright yellow. My brief stint at figure skating lessons could in no way account for yards of yellow lycra. But if this bathing suit and bra making thing works out… Purple/lavender 5″ wide striped knit remnants from rugby jerseys. Bright pink twill, perfect for pedal pushers once I get this jeans thing down. I can’t even recall the rest of the color explosion hidden in an old chest. But it’s waiting for me. The patterns were inaccessible, yet I can’t wait to look at those with newfound respect. You’re the bomb, Mom!

Those fabrics are all so TOTALLY you!! :) How serendipitous that so many of them fit into your spring colour palette ;)

That is a sickening fabulous haul! I cannot believe you have access to all of those things and more. You are incredibly lucky!!

My mind was kinda blown. I had to hold back, lest I become a crazy hoarder!

Aw, jealous! The only thing I ever bring home from the parents house are articles on using mushroom soup that she keeps cutting out for me…inexplicably.

You mean there’s more than green bean casserole w/fried onions?!

    Hahah, awesome! I’m so jealous!

    truly the mother lode!

Oh, lucky you! I tried to raid my mom’s old stash when I re-upped my sewing a couple of years ago, but sadly it was all home-dec or stuff that I left behind (for good reason) when I moved out. Bleh.

Nice score on the foot doodads, too! The one with the wide, flat foot with all the slits and slots in is for stitching on braid and ribbon, or edgestitching together two different pieces. I have something similar except it clips to the needle-plate rather than being attached to the foot. And I’m scared to try it out because it’s a little bent. :)

That’s what I was expecting! Broadcloth, horrible fabric I begged for as a kid. Granted, there are boxes of that ready for donation, but once I started digging… :)

Aaah, interesting… is it meant to keep the ribbon flat & not sucked into the throat plate? I’m still scared! The ruffler looks like a torture device. I’m hoping the rolled hem foot makes my day, because my serger made 2 brilliant rolled hems. And not one more.

Damn, girl! My mother does not sew. My mother is amazing, but she does not sew. I love her, but I look longingly upon your bounty and I drool. I. DROOL. Awesome!

Ooh lucky you, and what fun deciding what to make with it all! My mother gave me a lot of her fabrics a year ago – and I’ve hardly made a dent in the pile so far!

    • March 6, 2012 9:04 am

I know, right! I’m so afraid I’ll just start hoarding it now, and if I have a child, the cycle will continue!!!

  12. March 6, 2012 9:05 am

Holy crap! What an awesome haul! I love the “trip down memory lane” fabrics… good lord! Amazing that fabric (and clothing) can hold such memories!!

    • March 6, 2012 9:25 am

I can’t begin to understand the Atomic sweatshirt fabric. Or the fact that I actually wore it. WTFery!!!

Eek! I am giddy for you and all of your treasures!!!

I remember the maroon and the black/floral…the maxi skirt looked familiar but, I’m not sure I remember the skirt!

It’s funny because before I even read the MC Hammer part, I was wondering about them. How embarrassing that we fought about something like that. I’m sure it was my fault…me and my bull-headed ways. We should’ve joined this group: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwzN4633mpI

We can get a Newbury St. group together, no?

    Hurray, for spring cleaning!

    • March 6, 2012 4:09 pm

WHAT?!?! That is insane! I’m laughing so hard I can barely type. And please! I have no idea what the argument was, but I doubt little ol’ me was innocent :) I was prolly jealous of your mad moves.

You don’t need to remember the maxi skirt. Really. Oh! I do need the waist measurements of two beautiful little girls :)

Nice haul! I’ve been the happy recipient of some of my mom’s stash. She hasn’t sewn clothing for years but there are still a few pieces kicking around from the late 70’s/early 80’s when she was sewing for herself and my brothers and I. Some of it is a little bizarre, but I’ll find the right project at some point.

    • March 6, 2012 4:10 pm

Yeah, there was a lot of bizarre. Oh man, that could have filled several posts!!! What were we/our moms thinking?!

  15. March 6, 2012 2:44 pm

Excuse me while I drool. So jeal . . .

  16. March 7, 2012 1:20 pm

    Wow, what a great haul!

  17. March 7, 2012 7:52 pm

Is it wrong that my favorite part of the haul is the weird patchwork poly? It totally is. I may have tons of textured double-knit poly in my own stash. My crazy runs pretty deep too.

    • March 8, 2012 10:00 am

It’s a total I love it/I hate it fabric, right?! But the feel of it is just soooo awful and scratchy.

  18. March 10, 2012 5:35 pm

Whoa, fun! Love the loot, dude! Although… I gotta say… the 90’s florals brought back some memories of fashion sins that I prefer to forget I committed! What a decade…

    • March 13, 2012 10:25 am

I know! Toss me a crazy hat and call me Blossom. The shame…
