Sunny Day Grey

November 30, 2011

Now that I’ve stripped bare, let me take a few minutes to get dressed. And make certain it’s a properly fitted garment. If I’m going to go ahead and have a third-life crisis, I might as well look good, no?

Oh, what have we here? Could it be the perfect pencil skirt? New and improved over my previous two renditions, made to fit my curves like a glove.

It is most definitely new. And improved. There is a back vent (holler if you know Sunni’s tutorial on that). A full lining of silk habotai. Organza to reinforce the invisible zip. Waistband interfaced with fusible woven and organza for a little extra firmness, then hand stitched on the inside (I kinda hate the stitch in the ditch method). Side seams serged (fashion fabric), French (lining) and CB of lining pinked. Hem tape hand catchstitched. My oh my, this grey stretch sateen number is sure to knock it out of the park.

But the fit, oh the fit. Raise your hands if you’ve ever fallen prey to the evil temptations of over-fitting a garment. I absolutely love the way this looks from the front, nice and slim/curvy/sexy. But the rear view isn’t perfect on me. And really, I think I had a good thing going with the first two versions. It’s an age-old story, the one about the answer being right in front of you all along. Girl meets skirt, girl falls for skirt, they have some really great times together. Then, one day, girl catches a glimpse of something new. Maybe better, she isn’t certain, but must find out what that little glimmer is. Torn up and cast aside, skirt stays in the background, strong and silent, waiting for this dalliance to pass.

At a certain point, I knew this wasn’t THE skirt. But I just had to finish. I was beyond a stopping point, and out of grey sateen.

If you truly love something, let it go, right? This skirt should be worn by someone, so if you are 27-28″ in the waist and less than 39″ in the hip, this might work for you. FYI, my fullest point is about 11″ from my thinnest point. If you’re fullest is a tad higher, this will prob work better. My waist is 28″ and the band was cut to fit, but the flat half measurement (below) is 13.5″. So, leave a comment to win. And please oh please don’t live some place insanely expensive to ship to. I just quit my job. Ha! If you want to comment, but don’t want to enter, just say so and I’ll take you out of the running.

This is my little way of saying thank you for the encouragement and kind wishes. I am truly grateful.

Now a question: I’m at a hair-pulling moment where I can no longer live without a dress form. I just know that it will make my life so much easier, my garments so much better, and my efforts to find the perfect fit will be rewarded. I can taste it like I can taste the bubbly I’ve been drinking every night. (Everybody drinks champagne regularly, admit it.) I’m pretty much ready to go with the Fabulous Fit misses 3/4, but wanted to see what you all think. Do you use a dress form? What make/model? What do you love/dislike about your form? The Fabulous Fit is selling me at the moment because their whole schtick is the custom pads you insert to fill out the form to your shape, not just your measurements. Sounds like a winner, but I still like to crowd source.

Off to finish up more UFOs so that I can have a fresh start with all the other pretty little things distracting me. Like this blouse I’ve become obsessed with… it exists only at Downton Abbey, on Lady Mary, and I really must make one. Black and white stripes, wide ones, silk. I digress.

Okay, rules: Leave a comment, win a skirt. Please only enter if you think it will fit you :) Contest is open until December 7, 2011, 23:59 EST. That’s midnight a week from now, folks. Want to whisper sweet nothings in my ear, but don’t want to enter? Just say so in your comment :) Here are the flat measurements (double the waist/hip)

  • waist – 13.5 ” / 34.29 cm
  • hip – 19.5″ / 49.53 cm
  • length – 26″ / 66 cm

ps- if you’ve ever done a giveaway, mind helping a sister out? how does one insert the results from the random number generator? i can run a test, but can’t grab the image of the results. i don’t want to add an actual widget to the blog, just get a single result. (ms. balloona, i’m looking at you…did you do a pay lottery for that cute customization?)

pps- don’t count yourself out if you live far away… i was only being snarky. unless you live in Antarctica, but what good would a pencil skirt do you there? unless it were a puffer pencil skirt. also, i always forget about screen shots, just never really utilize them. so thanks, smarty skirts Ginnie & Louise and a big doh to me :)

Do you have the ability to do a screen-shot? There’s a print screen button somewhere on most computers that will let you take a picture of whatever’s on your monitor. Then, you can crop it down and add it as a photo. Put me in the running while you’re at it. It looks beautifully made and it’s just my size! :)

I am crossing my fingers that I get a form this year for Christmas!

I like to drink champagne on a regular basis, but I cut myself off from drinking and sewing at the same time because my “good” ideas didn’t seem so good the next morning…

What a lovely skirt, sadly, my waist is larger than 28″ so it will not zip up on me.

I am looking forward to the comments on the dressform. I don’t have one at the moment and I do realize it would be useful to have. I keep thinking of doing a duct tape version for a starting point, but never quite make arrangements with someone to do it with me.

What a beautifully finished skirt – what a bummer that you aren’t happy with the skirt. My measurements are slightly bigger that the skirt so I’ll take my name out of the hat (damn!). But I was curious aboout your vent. I’m the process of making a pencil skirt myself (so I know ALL about the over fitting senario!) and I’ve put in a vent using Sunni’s wonderful tutorial. My problem, however, is how to attach the lining. Sunni did explain…but it goes way over my head. Any tips you have would be very gratefully appreciated!!!

I envy your sewing skills, that skirt is exactly my size and I live in TEXAS! So please, enter me in the contest.

I have my eye on a dress form on a stand on ebay. The price is about the price of the stand alone, I think. It’s smaller than I am and I am thinking about making a body shell out of medical cast material and stuffing the space between the form and the cast. I will rethink this if it seems like a bad idea to people.

What is your next skirt fabric?

I dig the skirt, and it’s my size, so count me in. :)

I got a dress form for Christmas or my birthday, a “My Double” if that means anything to you. The material covering it annoys me, it’s velvety and catches the fabric and makes pull-on dresses very hard to pull on. If I ever figure out how to get lining fabrics to hold still I might make a full-length slip for her. It is nice to have something other than me to view a garment on, but even though our measurements are the same, the shape is different.

you’re on mac right? (either that or I made that up!)
cmd shift and 3 will screenshot your full screen, cmd shift and 4 will bring up a little cursor to select which bit of the screen you grab into the pic…
your skirt looks and sounds amazing – i’m not gonna enter because i live in faraway shipping land and i don’t think my waist is that small ;-) but I will ask what was it like to work with habotai? was recommended to me but i have yet to even touch a sample!!

that is a lovely skirt, but i sadly do not have a 28″ waist, sigh…

i made a body dress form out of the brown packing tape you have to get wet for it to be sticky. just layer it on over a tshirt you don’t care about (since you have to cut it off) and make sure your assistant is someone you know well, since they will be touching all of your business! i used about 3-4 layers of tape, then stuffed it with paper shipping wrap, styrofoam peanuts, and two large pieces of styrofoam at the shoulders to reinforce it. there was no specific reason i used that stuff except for that i had it all laying around. also, i stuck a hanger in it before sealing it shut so i can hang it up. it works pretty well, and it cost under $10!

WELL. yes, please, with amaretto on top, to entering the chic giveaway. holy COW.

and, aview is correct, i used the good old mac keyboard shortcut to screenshot my random number generator result (but i just go straight to commandshift4, which instantly makes your mouse into a crosshairs).

    i used the random..org site: http://www.random.org/widgets/integers/
    i used this chart:
    http://html-color-codes.com/

to choose white & red as my colors. then i entered my digits (1 to whatever), locked the sums, and when my widget was created i hit sum, then screenshot.

(i’ve been drinking all day so this might be a bit muddled. whatcanyado.)

Gosh, your waist is tiny. So no, I’m not entering. Even though the skirt looks very pretty! :)
I’d also just take a screenshot (most keyboard have a little “print”-key somewhere on the upper right side).

I have a papermache dressform in the making. Well, I covered myself with plaster bandages in April, and have yet to make up some papermache to cast the form. Maybe next spring… ;)

I just found your blog and I’m so impressed with your work! That skirt is just my size and it’s GORGEOUS, so I’d love to be entered to win!

I have a Singer DF150 Dress Form. It’s perfect for my needs, but it’s not the sturdiest thing.

I totally love pencil skirts. Here’s hoping I luck out! (It’s happened before, so I’m convinced it can happen again.)
